If this house could talk… Exhibition Opening Night
Legendary Brisbane advocacy collective Women’s House in collaboration with Ya’djin Women’s Collective commemorates 50 years of women’s struggle to end domestic and sexual violence.
This exhibition project will honour and acknowledge the history and culture of one of the oldest collectively run feminist programs in Australia. In Queensland, this meant campaigning and protesting for better rights for women – indeed surviving – during the Bjelke-Petersen years. Federally, the collective was caught in the storms of the Whitlam/Fraser era, and the changing landscape of women’s lib and waves of feminism. The exhibition will involve Ya’djin Women’s Collective First Nation Weavers Project that has been created in and with community over the past year, as well as screen printing, writing and music workshops done by community. In addition, filming for a 60-minute documentary detailing the ‘herstory’ of Women’s House and the stories of the collective will be taking place on the night.
It will run from 31st July – 8th August and then will turn into a digital exhibit on Women’s House website.
